Sandihurst, Canterbury
Sandihurst Winery is located at West Melton, approximately 20 kilometres west of the city of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. There are 12 hectares of vines planted in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. The vineyard was planted in the late 1980's, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the area.
Winemakers at Sandihurst believe the quality of wine is a direct reflection of the quality of fruit produced. To improve their crops they employ extensive shoot thinning, crop thinning and leaf plucking, working upon the theory that wider spaced vines allow more air and light to penetrate the canopy, countering disease and facilitating ripening.
